Dear Chris:

I would like if, on your next Plain Talk show, you can offer your opinion on the Income Tax Act regarding the application of penalty for late filing of income tax return on the part of employees. You would have noticed in the print media (Stabroek News, February 5, 2012; and Kaieteur News, March 8, 2012) two letters, that oppose each other, on the very issue. I wonder what do you make of Section 99(2) given that employees are subjected to PAYE and therefore, under normal circumstance, are not be subjected to Section (99)(1)(a).

Thanks

Thanks for your insightful and useful articles and letters, Mr. Ram.
I concur that the world as a whole will not end in Dec 2012. This is not to say that we as individuals, or even Guyana as a political nation, can not have ends then.
It would be more strictly correct to say that, as seen from the Earth, the Sun crosses the galactic equator at the winter solstice for the first time (in ~26000 years). Because the Sun's disc is about 1/2 degree wide, the event is true every year from about 1980 to 2016, with the centre of the Sun crossing the galactic equator in 1998, still over 6 degrees away from what is visually estimated to be the galactic centre.
Nearer approaches (<6 degrees) can be calculated for the years 2219 to 2225.

Hello ChrisRam,

I was looking at the Stabroek News this morning and the Financial Statement of GBTI caught my eyes. I think you had dealt with this topic before but I would just like to see reaction again. The spread between Interest Earned 14% (3435/24660) and average interest paid on deposits (1.8%), which amount to 12.2% is large. It is almost like if the bank in in Guyana are using depositors fund to make large returns while paying depositors next to nothing in interest. What is your position on this? Regards,
